Hi all,

Anyone knows how to transform old Oracle BPA exported XML (in AML using BPMN 1.1) to BPMN 2.0? I need to export all BPMN in OBPA out and import to another system supporting BPMN 2.0.

Below are the software version details my company currently using:
Oracle Business Process Architect version: 11gR1 (423484) (SR 2009_04)
Aris modules version: 7.1.0.423484

Thanks.

When running the report "create process manual" at a value chain level, I find that the BPMN models at the next level down appear in the report, but any FADs attached to individual process steps do not.

Anybody have this problem or able to tell me why this occurs>

Question about Using of Inclusive gateway

$

Hello everyone,

I am wondering about using of Inclusive gateway and your opinion will be very useful for me. I know theoretically that if we have 3 branches after the OR gateway (lets numbering them 1,2 and 3), the possible options are:

  • only one of them;
  • 1 and 2;
  • 1 and 3;
  • 2 and 3;
  • all can be happened.

But how we modeled the case when there is  combination(s) which can not happened ever (not all combinations is possible) . An example  is business actions taken based on survey results. In the example below, one process is triggered if the consumer is satisfied with product A. Another flow is triggered when the consumer indicates that they are satisfied with product B. A third process is triggered if they aren't satisfied with A. Look at the picture in the attached file:

When an user read the model, the possible combinations are cleared to understand from descriptions (conditions) but how ARIS will know which can or not be happened from an executable point of view? The example is from ARIS Express, but question concerns ARIS 7 or ARIS 9.

Thanks in advance those who will respond to this question.

Best regards,

Mariya Chapkanova

Hallo zusammen,

Equivalent of SAP shadow functions in BPMN

$

Hi,

regarding ARIS / SAP Solution Manager synchronization, does anyone know if there is an equivalent of SAP shadow functions in BPMN models ?

In EPC, SAP shadow functions allow using occurrence copies that get replicated as shortcuts in Solution Manager.

In BPMN models, call activities can be used to create shortcuts to Solution Manager.

However, I found that when used for that purpose, BPMN call activities have the following critical limitations compared to EPC shadow activities:

1 - When looking at call activities properties, there is no way for the modeler or the end-users to easily find from which source activity this call activity was created from.

2 - Attributes of the source activity are not visible in the call activity (since it's not an occurrence copy), which then makes them completely useless for end-users who are looking for information in the business processes.

3 - When the name of the source activity is updated, the new names doesn't replicate automatically to all the call activities that have been created from this source activity. This brings then absolutely no added value for modelers compared to just duplicating all activities with definition copies.

So basically call activities cannot be used for creating useful shortcuts to Solution Manager in BPMN models because of the above limitations.

Is there another object in BPMN that can be used like EPC SAP shadow activities ?

We are in ARIS 9.6, in case the latest versions are bringing additional capabilities in that area.

Thanks !

Subprocess symbol in ARIS Cloud basic

Hi

I'm new to ARIS Cloud (basic version) and I'm trying to map processes in BPMN Process Diagrams. When I make a sub-process i get lager "task looking symbol" (see example below) rather than an a symbol with "+" indicating a sub-process.

Once I managed to get the right sub-process symbol with a "+" (see example below) , but I can't seem to make it again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Swim Lanes in ARIS

Hi all,

I am new to ARIS cloud. I am currently on the 30 day free trial and would like to recreate my flow chart on ARIS.

I would like to customize swim lanes in the EPC model, for example on the horizontal axis I would have the lanes customer, sales team, and logisitics team. So far I found the EPC row or column display however I can not change the titles of the lanes which don't fit my purpose.

Does anyone know how I can solve this problem?

Thank you!

Need clarification on interrupting conditional vs cancel vs compensation

$

The scenario
Let's say we have part of a basic procurement business process
1.  Start:  Determine goods/services are needed
2.  Create a requisition
3.  Route it for approval
4.  Approve/reject
5.  Create a PO (sourcing is already done)
6.  Possibly route it for approval as well
7.  Communicate w/ the supplier
8.  End:  Supplier accepts the PO

Now, for the approvals they are actually a complex sub-process.  If at anytime the requisition is withdrawn then the approval process aborts because there is nothing to approve.  If the requisition is canceled then the whole process just stops.

I've modeled the requisition's approval subprocess, but I'm not sure how to handle its abort & which interrupting events would best be used.

  • My understanding of a cancel event is:  Subprocess is not done.  If cancel message is caught then all activities are undone.
  • My understanding of a compensation event is:  Subprocess is done.  If compensation message is caught then a non-specific set of steps are done to reverse the process.
  • My understanding of a conditional event is:  Subprocess is not done.  If a condition exist then abort the process, but do not undo anything that happened inside the process.

You can withdraw a requisition before, during, or after requisition approval with different responses

  • If you withdraw before routing for approval, then you just revert back to creating / editing the requisition.
  • If you withdraw during the approval subprocess, then you notify the current approver that the requisition is withdrawn.  The process reverts back to the beginning with the requisition going through the creation activity.
  • If you withdraw after the approver subprocess then it is the same as withdrawing it prior to routing for approval.  You just have a record that prior approval was given.  Withdrawal is no longer possible once the PO is created.

Now, for the questions
1.  I think this requisition approval subprocess is a transaction subprocess because the entire approval chain needs to complete and if it does not complete then it needs to be redone from the beginning.  Is that correct?

2.  If I withdraw during the approval then from the business's point-of-view the approval is undone even if the original approval requests exist but cannot be completed.  The approval process is also not complete.  Thus, I should be modeling the interrupt with an intermediate cancel event on the boundary.  Is that correct?

3.  If I am supposed to use an intermediate cancel event then am I required to have a cancel end event within the process?  The withdrawal of the requisition happens outside of the approval process, so it doesn't seem likely.  To rephrase:  can you have an interrupt on the border of a subprocess if you have no throwing event within the subprocess?

4.  Alternatively I could say that I interrupted the approval subprocess because of a state change:  the requisition is withdrawn.  Should I instead be using a conditional event with a sequence flow back to the activity of creating / editing the requisition?

5.  If the requisition is canceled then it means that the request was in error and no further requisition will be coming for that request.  Would this be considered a hazard and thus use an interrupting error event?  Or do I use a cancel?

6.  If I need to withdraw after the approval is done should I have a compensation event on the subproceses border leading to a "Withdraw Requisition" activity via association or do I simply draw a sequence flow from one of the other events (cancel or conditional) back to the "Create Requisition" activity and label the sequence flow as "Requisition was withdrawn"?

7.  Am I overthinking this?  Are there any good examples or reference books which discuss supply chain processes in BPMN terms, even in part?

BPMN export to XML

Hello

I am confused about the BPMN export to XML function in ARIS 9.7.

Using Architect 9.7, I can export a simple BPMN Collaboration Diagram 2.0  to XML, without compression and with "Minimum Export".  It results in a .xml file supposed to be usable by third parties...  Now, when I edit the xml file under Windows, it certainly does not look like XML statements, even with an XML editor. It looks like scrambled binary values inside (see the attached file).  Do I do something wrong or is there a special environment to set up?  Thanks for any help.

Capability Transition States

$

Good afternoon,

As a new user of ARIS, I am after a little support.

Our business have a number of defined components which are:

> Guiding Principles

> Capabilities (with supporting processes modelled in ARIS)

> Goals & Objectives defined for each capability, articulating the desired target maturity

> Projects - many in flight Projects with clear Deliverables

The business is attempting to 'join the dots' and show how Project Deliverables link to Goals, and help to develop each capability over time across a defined set of transition states. Traditionally this has been managed manually with Excel and PowerPoint.

How can ARIS support this activity?

process modeling

hy,

i have a question about how can i model a process using all the necessary elements and when i need to present a simplified  version of this model, how can i hide, in the model, some elements. For example, if i want to attached to one task the it system used to process that task, can i hide the it system when i don't need to show them ?

Thx

Using occurance copies of processes for different roles

hi all,

I have a situation where client has standard processes in which only roles/positions vary depending on the location, what is the recommended approach to hand the same?

1. use occurrence copies of processes & functions & create separate FDs for each location

2. Use single set of process models & link multiple roles to it?

3. or any other approach?

EPCs to Swim lane

$

Hello All,

I need guidance and tips to convert  EPCs into Swim Lane process maps (such as Visio) manually?

I am referring to a repository where the processes were detailed as EPC  diagrams, I need to recreate the process maps as swim lane in Visio.

The challenge is:

  1. The roles are not associate in EPCs. Even though, I am preparing the initial drafts and need not assign exact role at this time, I can keep place holders  -  but how do I bracket the tasks into lanes?
  2. I don't have access to ARIS license, the repository I am referring is only web based (backend is ARIS)  - so cant convert EPC to swimlane using a tool

Would really appreciate any suggestion

Many Thanks!

Sree

ARIS Express and ARIS Business Designer/Architect

$

Hi all,

in my company, we are working with the ARIS Business Designer/Architect in Version 7.2.

We have now an ongoing project with external consultants which have to design processes - so our idea was to let them use ARIS Express (version 2.4 - the latest release) to create BPMN processes.

I tried now in several ways to import the ARIS Express .adf files into our system (even with the help of our administrator), however all import tries are failing. I tried for example to use the complete ARIS Model Templates as described here: https://www.ariscommunity.com/users/andresamarco/2013-07-15-how-import-aris-express-aris-it-architect-72

Here is the error message:

Attached you find an example file - would be great if someone could help me to solve this issue so we can import the project results in our ARIS plattform.

Cheers!

ARIS Queries in UML Designer

$

I'm aware that the current Query capability in ARIS does not allow one to configure queries to interrogate UML content created using UML Designer? Surely this should be included to support full what if analysis from analysis to design? For example, if you have BPMN service tasks to indicate reused UML2 operations for the service task etc.

Is this planned or will one have to develop your own JavaScript queries / reporting?

Reading and understanding models.

Hello Community,

I just jumped on the Aris bandwagon. I have attempt modelling within the Aris tool. Obviously practice makes perfect. Sometimes I find it difficult reading existing models. I am kindly asking whether there is a rudimentary document or information is available how to read and understand models that are model in Aris.
